HISTORIANS are often indebted to the records of guilds and societies in their search for the historical facts about the town or country in which they are interested. Dalkeith, like all other towns of any importance, had its Trade Guilds, but the only one which has survived the course of years is the Freemasons. According to the Statistical Account of Scotland, the Weavers were established in 1566, the Hammermen in 1694, Shoemakers in 1714, and the Freemasons in 1724. The antiquity of the latter Operative Lodge must, however, go back many years before this date, as reference to it is made in the records of the Melrose Lodge in 1681. |

This lodge is over 400 years old and is now situated within the Town Hall of St Andrews, Fife. The exact founding date of the Lodge is not known, however in 1598 the Lodge was summoned to a convention to be held in St Andrews, along with 4 other Lodges who subscribed to the St Clair or Shaw Charter. Why St Andrews? Possibly because it was the largest operative lodge extant at the time. Meetings are held from September to April every second Friday. |
In terms of Freemasonry, Lodge St. John is ancient. It connects directly with "the Ludge of Masons of dunfermling" which held ,St. Clair Charters in 1598 and 1628. It doubtless existed prior to these dates, which gives a fair assumption that it played a part in the addition to, Dunfermline Palace (1540). The earliest record in possession of the Lodge is dated 1698. |
