Lodge St Magdalene No.100 received it’s Charter from the Grand lodge of Scotland held at lodge St Geils, Edinburgh, on 3rd February 1766. The number then allocated to the lodge was 127 but in 1816 the number was changed to 96 and in 1835 when the lodges under the Scottish constitution wee again renumbered St Magdalene became No 100. |

Robert Burns Mother Lodge. On 17th May 1771 Lodge Kilwinning No.0, granted a charter to form Lodge Tarbolton Kilwinning (in Tarbolton). Several of the brethren however, seeing clearly that the power of Mother Kilwinning was on the decline, and wishing to erect a Lodge under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, which since 1736 was steadily growing in power, applied to that body to form another Lodge, and on 5th February 1773, St. David Tarbolton No.174, was chartered. Those brethren still attached to the original Lodge, seeing the wisdom of working under the Grand Lodge of Scotland likewise applied to that body for recognition, which resulted in the erection of Lodge St. James, No.178 in 1774. |
Application was made on 26th December 1767 to the Grand Lodge of Scotland and, greatly aided by Lodge St. John No. 16, Falkirk, the Carron Lodge No. 138 came into existence and remained so until 1836, when it ceased to function. Bro. John McKay P.M. of Carron Lodge No. 138 was instrumental of the resusitation of the Lodge, having retained the original Charter during the 45 years the Lodge was dormant. He, along with several others, got together and re-formed the Lodge, then made application to the Grand Lodge of Scotland and so Carron Lodge was back, but with the new number 139. Unfortunately, little is known of No. 138, as all records were lost. |
We, as Operative Masons of 140 are very proud that we are probably now, the only true Operative Lodge left in the United Kingdom. We are also unusual in that to become a member of the Operative Lodge you must have served your apprenticeship with a recognised trade within the building industry. To be considered for membership for the Operative Lodge you must also be twenty-one years old. |
The first Minute Book gives a definite date of the origin of the Lodge, it being created in December 1771, without a Grand Lodge Charter. It is unfortunate and regrettable that the first pages are missing from the first Minute Book, therefore the history does not actually commence until August 1773, the Master being a Robert Harvie, who occupied the Chair on several succeeding years. |
